Make an account

Start by setting up a login and entering your details. For a seamless experience, use your phone’s camera to scan your passport book. If you’re traveling as a group, each individual adult must have their own account and fill out their own details.

Register your trip

Once your information is in place, register your planned entry/return to Japan. If you have used Visit Japan before, past information is saved. If it’s applicable yet again, you can just reuse the information saving some time.

Go through Immigration

Upon completion, the system generates QR Codes for both Immigration and Customs. When you arrive in Japan, all you need to do is scan the appropriate QR Code.

Drawing from my experience in October of 2023, the immigration process was swift. Usually, a flight attendant hands you an immigration/customs sheet while you’re in the air. This process takes out the hassle of completing the form in the dimly lit cabin. Once on the ground, all you really had to do was take a quick photo, take your thumbprints at a kiosk, and scan the QR code at the immigration desk. I suggest having a screenshot of your QR codes since airport Wi-Fi can be a bit of a hit-or-miss.

Go through Customs

After grabbing your bags from the carousel, head to the electronic declaration kiosk. Display your QR code at the kiosk, complete the procedure, and breeze through the Electronic Declaration Gate to the airport terminal. There are people waving around a sign directing you to where you have to go.

Exciting news for future travelers—starting January 25th, Customs and Immigration QR codes will be unified into one, making the process even more straightforward.

In the end

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler to Japan, follow these 4 easy steps for a hassle-free entry and customs experience.
